The Laurentian Mountains in southern Quebec are one of the oldest mountain ranges on the planet. These rounded peaks are covered by dense forest and home to many large lakes and numerous rivers. Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula extends into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, and contains the Chic-Choc Mountains, a rugged extension of the Appalachian Mountains. Geology Ninety percent of Québec’s bedrock consists of Precambrian rocks of the Canadian Shield. This geological assemblage is world-renowned for its gold, copper, zinc, nickel, iron, and ilmenite deposits.

We enjoy the scenic drive around the Gaspé Peninsula, with its perfect blend of sea and mountains, coastal villages and sheltered fishing coves. En route we visit the Musée de la Gaspésie, and then venture into Forillon National Park, bordered by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Gaspé Bay. The zonal distribution of glacial features is due to changes in the conditions at the base of the glacier: it was melting in the St. Lawrence channel, freezing through Zones I and II, frozen in Zone III and melting in Zone IV.
